I always got confused between different Primates. They all looked the same to me. So, I spent some time in creating this simple image flow chart.
Primates are classified into two categories:- Strepsirrhini and Haplorhini.
Its difficult to put everything into one tree. So, lets divide them into branches.
Haplorhini are classified into Tarsiiformes and Simiiformes.
Speaking about loneliness, Tarsier is the lone primate in Tarsiiformes infra family.
Simiiformes is majorly divided into New World monkeys and Catarhini. Lets first look at the new world monkeys.
Catarhini are divided into Old world monkeys and Hominoidea. We humans come under Hominoidea. But, lets look at the Old world monkeys first.
And finally, Hominoidea..
Ofcourse, most of these have sub species down the tree which I am not going to cover in this post.
Hope, this helps you identify one next time you watch NatGeo or Discovery.
P.S.
All the pictures are taken from Wikipedia.
